A musical dialogue

04.16.08 | Comment?

We recently hosted Ann Hamilton here in Denver to develop her commission for Dialog:City. It was truly inspiring to see and participate in her process of discovery (a contemporary model of research). Ann reminds and brings out in me and those who were at our collaborative planning table of the most fundamental creative spirit that drives many of us. Ann, admits constantly, that she herself is not a “singer” or a specialist on the history of song and choir culture. But, opening up a conversation with choirs during her visit, Ann brought forward some of the significant skills her voice brings. Her sincere and passionate investigation of how we exchange our voice and listen to one another. If we might find a way to model through music another type of dialogue that is predicated on listening, she may qualify as not as a singer but a critical composer.

After her visit, she shared this project that speaks to her vision. Connected to a film initiative by the TED Conference, see Kenya singing for India.
